It follows a copy of the online help text
(available through the Psion help key).
*** Introduction ***
Pauk is a swotting utility. Or let's rather call it a flash card
manager. You use it for any kind of data that you need to
memorize, such as vocabulary, codes, acronyms, technical
terms, etc. Whatever data can be considered as a question
/answer, or a term/translation pair is suitable for Pauk. Such
a pair (plus some additional information) is stored as a flash
card (one Pauk record).
And Pauk helps learning (see Learning guide) in an efficient way.
Many bestselling books on human memory and learning have
recommended flash cards again and again. And this is what
Pauk is all about.

*** Cards & Levels ***
Each card has a left side (front), a right side (reverse) and a
notes field. Left side, right side and notes may be swapped at
your discretion, individually or on many cards simultaneously.
Each field may contain any text up to 255 characters, in up to
3 lines. Attributes provide additional means to find or sort cards.

Each card is assigned a level (1-4), a new card is always on level 1.
<browse>, <list> and <learn> mode are all level-sensitive. To select
your browse level, go menu item <levels>. Individual card levels are
changed when <learn>ing, but may be set manually in the <levels>
dialog as well.

Pauk keeps track of when a card has changed (expressed as
'days gone'), be it by editing or learning. This may be used to find
cards unseen for a while, or sort accordingly. The 'days gone' may
be reset individually, or all together.

*** Learning ***
<learn> mode just hides one side of a card. Reading the other
side, you guess what is hidden. Any key unhides the missing
text, and with the next key you assign a new level to the current
card (before the next card is presented for learning):
#024 to promote by one level (right guess),
#025 to demote by one level (wrong guess),
<psion>#024 to set highest level,
<psion>#025 to reset lowest level,
<enter> to ignore.

Thus step by step you separate the easy cards from the more
tricky ones. Next time you may select to learn on level 1 only,
to review level 4 only, or to list them altogether. Learning can be
from the left side, from the right side, or at random.

*** Keyboard Guide ***
In browse mode:
   <1-4> selects a level,
   <0> shows all cards,
any character starts a quick search,
   <esc> opens the level summary,
<tab> edits the current card (edit mode)
   <shift-enter> edits its attributes,
<enter> moves to the next card,
#024 (#025) moves to first (last) card,
#026 (#027) moves to next (previous) card,
<space> creates a new card (edit mode),
   <del> deletes the current card.
 In list mode:
any key shows the next screen,
   <esc> cancels list mode.
 In edit mode:
<tab> selects the next field, or saves the (new) card,
   <esc> cancels edit mode.

*** Files & Memory ***
You may <open> one card file only at a time. Most commands only
work when a card file is open. Pauk creates a backup-file upon
<open>. <revert> overwrites the current file with its back-up.
Files are saved automatically upon <new> or <open>. Upon <exit>
Pauk saves the current file automatically.

There is no limit to the number of cards Pauk can handle (but
your Psion's memory). However, we recommend to split
piles larger than 150 - 250 cards into separate files. This will
considerably improve speed of sort and find.

*** Printing & Exporting ***
Pauk doesn't provide intrinsic print capabilities. Instead cards
(or lists) are <export>ed, than printed from within 'Word' or 'Sheet'.
This provides access to the advanced formatting and previewing
features of the Psion built-in applications and keeps Pauk's
memory requirements low.

*** Thanks to ... ***
- Tom Dolbilin for his great help compiler (Hcp),
- Andy Clarkson for his great OPL preprocessor (OPP),
- the many of you who contributed to the various great WWW
pages, without which Pauk wouldn't exist,
- someone who (hopefully in the near future) will provide me
with a fully developed window text editor. The one found in Pauk
(versions 1.x) is written in OPL and suffers some obvious
limitations.
